3rd Grade - Peter Max Hearts

My ALL TIME FAVORITE artist to teach is... PETER MAX! I love his painterly style... I am a painter myself, and just love his quick blendy brush strokes!

I have been doing this lesson for over a decade... not every year, not exactly the same way, but it never gets old. I start the motivation for this lesson with two short video's I found on You Tube.
Here they are...

Each video is about 5 minutes long. Once the kids watch these, they can't wait
to get brushes in their hands!!! Have fun friends!

  1. You know I love these especially the one hanging in my home! :)

  2. do you have a quick step by step of your student's process with this lesson?

    1. My classes are 45 minutes long. First day I show the videos of Peter Max, then we take a 3 inch poster board strip, line it up on all 4 sides of the 18x18 paper and draw a boarder. Then trace a heart in the middle. If there is more time, students choose warm or cool colors for the heart and boarder. We get that painted, using his painterly style. Next week, we paint in the opposite color group around the heart. While I demonstrate the decorative lines and shapes, it dries enough to paint on top. Students add their decorations. The third week, if they need it, a little black india ink dry brush detail with the decorative line. The key with painting, dip brushes in 2 colors, then paint a few lines, leaving the streaks, not back and forth back and forth. I hope this helps, please ask more clarification questions if needed!

    2. Thank you for sharing. Going to try this next week. They are beautiful!

  3. What brand tempera paint did you use? The colors are so bright and vibrant.

  4. Finishing up this project with my first and second graders. They are all stunning!! Such a great idea. Thank you for sharing!
