3D Cubes in Tints

My students LOVE this lesson. Even though they are all making the same thing, they all end up different. I gave them the freedom to choose colors.  Here is the template I created and how we used it to draw and label the cubes.

Each table is set up with a color group. Red to orange, yellow to golden yellow, yellow green to deep green, blue greens to blue, cobalt blue to violet, magentas to red. Plus, each try has a white to mix tints. Then black and white and browns are offered at a counter space. I have students use styrofoam mixing trays at each table per color group, they mix lights to darks on the trays. 

1st Grade - Rainbow Fish!

This lesson is an original by Julie Werkman, who I student taught with 25 years ago. It is a great lesson for teaching the elements of art! Line, shape, color, texture, and value are all worked in! 

Any fishy book of your choice maybe the inspiration! 

First, we paint some light to dark blue waves on a large 18x24 blue construction paper for our fish bowl. 

I pre-trace the fish bowl on the back of the paper before the next class, then students cut out and add seaweed and rocks!

After painting a 9x12 paper with rainbow, or just in a colorful way, we trace a basic fish shape on the paper. Students design their top and bottom fins, plus scales and tale.

 Once we cut out the rainbow fish, we glue it on and add some metallic smaller fish! I precut small metallic fish for everyone, students decorate and design their fish and glue them on! I add a tiny piece of cardboard to the back of the metallic fish, gives them a little pop out look.

4th Grade Spooky Van Gogh!

I love Van Gogh and I love Halloween! A perfect combination! My students LOVED this painting so much.  We started the sky first with yellow to golden yellow, orange.  Then the violets with white to finish the sky.  The ground was mostly the straight, dark violet from the bottle. A TINY bit of black to make the ground darker than the sky.

Week two, week painted haunted houses and the cypress tree with India Ink.  Then anything SpOoKy they wanted to add!

Last step... a little silver Sharpie for added details! BOO! They are done! 😃
